THE IDEA
Bowen Stories is a community learning project sponsored by the Bowen Island Literacy Task Group inviting Bowen residents to share their cultural, generational and environmental experiences of living on Bowen through the use of Story Telling (video or written). Islanders will be asked to reflect upon moments, memories, pets, people and places of meaning and importance to construct their Bowen story. Once completed stories will be collected and organized to present a contemporary portrait of island life and Bowen's historical journey through the development of a video documentary and online EBook that will be used to increase awareness about island living and raise funds for other community learning projects.
HOW
A team of volunteer’s (island leaders, community members and students from IPS, BICS and the Discovery Island Learning Community) led by the Bowen Island Community Literacy Coordinator and the Bowen Island Community School Coordinator will connect with Bowen residents, groups and organizations from Jan to June 2011 collecting written/recorded stories, photos of Bowen and finally transferring all the stories and photos into a video documentary and online EBook. .
In order to reach as many people as possible we are offering a few ways for folks to participate; 1) Send in your written story to Stories of Bowen RR1 U64 - (No more than 3 pages or 1500 words), 2) Go to our website http://www.storiesofbowen.com enter the Share Your Story section and write your story there, 3) Contact us and we will come to you if you have mobility issues, or 4) Attend one our island sessions at Collin’s Hall or the Legion and enjoy a complimentary community meal, while you drop off, video tape or write your story on site.

TO DO WHAT
* Create a greater appreciation of who we are as island people and what we bring to our community;
* Increase our understanding of the diverse opinions and perspectives on Bowen;
* Develop a platform to share ideas and thoughts;
* Generate interest in ongoing community learning projects; and
* Create a video documentary and online EBook (book that can be purchased online) of stories gathered that can be shared with other communities and commercially sold. Only stories/material given with consent will be published

* Portray our diversity, commonality, differences and uniqueness;
* Discover what we can learn from each other;
* Limit isolation and fragmentation; and
* Increase community connections through the development of ongoing learning projects.
WE PROMISE
* To maintain your privacy and only publish your stories (i.e. putting stories on the internet like You Tube) if we have your permission.
* To avoid sending you tons of emails or mail outs.
